What Smart Devices Will Work With My Garage Door Opener?

will my garage door work with alexa google home ring doorbell and more

Foreword: So like many suburbanites with a growing collection of smart devices (in my case Amazon Alexa) I started to grow more curious about what aspects of my home I could integrate with my Alexa. Ever since I discovered I could turn off the lights with a voice command I was hooked on the whole home automation movement.

So that lead to me thinking:

What about my garage door opener?

I mean it made sense right, it’s all connected to my home WiFi so why not give it a try….Fast forward a month later and I now have waaaay too much knowledge on the subject and decided to write an article that would hopefully help anyone else who’s thinking of integrating their garage opener with their smart home.

I also put together this table that surmises some of that info. I highly recommend reading through the whole article as there’s lots of little quirks to be aware of when connecting your garage door to your smart home.

So Many Devices!

There are a lot of, “Smart,” devices on the market. If you want to upgrade your regular garage door opener to a smart one there is a lot to consider when it comes to what smart devices will work with your garage door opener versus those that won’t. It is kind of like how some apps exist for iPhones and Android, and some are only on one or the other, to give a metaphorical example.

Navigating what at times can feel like a bewildering number of choices when it comes to garage doors and smart devices can feel overwhelming.

This post we will break them down by examining the kind of smart garage door openers found in smart homes, the sort of options that exist for converting your existing garage door into a smart one, and smart cameras will be touched upon too. There are many devices, but after reading this article you should be able to determine which one is perfect for you!

What Garage Door Openers Work With Alexa?

amazon alexa garage door opener
amazon alexa garage door opener

About Alexa:

Alexa is arguably the, “Big dog” of smart devices. Found in countless homes that utilize Amazon and its Prime service, Alexa may not be the first voice assistant that ever existed, but it is one of the biggest and most popular. Used for everything from shopping on Amazon by voice, to connecting with thermostats or playing games, Alexa can also be programmed to work with a number of smart garage door openers.

Garage Door Openers That Are Compatible with Alexa:

Smart garage door openers that can sync-up with Alexa include the Genie Aladdin Connect, Senclo Fi, Garageio, and also Garadget.

Features Supported by Alexa:

Alexa can be programmed to respond to a number of voice commands, with, “Alexa, open my garage,” of course being one. By syncing it with other apps such as IFTTT you can also make it so that as soon as Alexa senses you are nearby your garage (e.g. you are pulling-in home and your phone connects to the Wi-Fi network) it knows to open the garage door for you as well.

What Garage Door Openers Work With Google Home?

google home garage door opener
google home garage door opener

About Google Home: Google Home is a series of devices created by–who else–Google, including the Google Smart Home Assistant. Google Home devices have the benefit of being connected to Google’s impressive array of features and the #1 search function in the World.

Garage Door Openers That Are Compatible with Google Home:

While Google may lead in many areas when it comes to search and tech, its Home Assistant is a bit less popular than Amazon and this is reflected in a smaller number of smart garage door openers that are compatible with Google Home. The Senclo Fi, Garadget, Genie Aladdin Connect, and Chamberlain/Liftmaster myQ are all easily compatible with the Google Home devices….but if you want to use Chamberlain/Liftmaster myQ be aware that there is an additional $1 monthly fee. That won’t break the bank by any means, but it is a bit annoying to feel nickel-and-dimed when you’ve already spent money on your smart device and smart garage door opener.

Features Supported by Google Home:

You can have your Google Home set up so that it responds to voice commands to open as well as enabling GPS functions via apps such as IFTTT which will have it respond to your being in close proximity when arriving home and opening the garage.

What Garage Door Openers Work With Ring?

garage door opener ring doorbell

About Ring:

Ring is an immensely popular home security system that can connect to your phone or other smart devices. It allows you to see who might be at your doorstep (be they a welcome visitor or unwanted intruder/solicitor/annoying neighbor) and is fantastic for home security, with it possible to have cameras inside our outside your home. Does it do much with garages, however? Well, kind of.

Garage Door Openers That Are Compatible With Ring:

While there are programs that can through work-around methods make Ring work with an assortment of smart garage door openers, only the Ecolink Garage Door Tilt Sensor works directly with Ring, and it does not open or close the garage so much as allow you to be aware if your garage is open or closed.

Features Supported by Ring:

Ring has a number of great security features with its ability to detect motion, record video, and broadcast your voice to anyone at your doorstep, but in terms of features with garage doors that are purposely included without complicated programming, Ring lacks much beyond the garage door sensor. Ring is fantastic for home security outside and in your house, but maybe not so much for garage doors.

What Garage Door Openers Work With HomeLink?

homelink garage door opener
homelink garage door opener

About HomeLink:

HomeLink is one of the most often used car-to-home automation systems. It can be installed in a number of cars and allows them to, “Talk,” to gate openers or smart lights to garage door openers. By having HomeLink within your vehicle you should be able to access 99% of garage doors.

Garage Door Openers That Work With HomeLink:

That 99% claim seems quite accurate as HomeLinks works with pretty much any garage door opener. Allstar, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Genie, Guardian, Hormann, Liftmaster, Linear, Marantec, Overhead Door, Ryobi, Sommer Home Automation, Wayne Dalton, and Xtreme Garage are all proudly listed as compatible options. HomeLink is clearly handy if your car can support it, because your garage most likely can!

Features Supported by HomeLink:

HomeLink is relatively easy to program so that with the touch of a button it opens all desired gates or garages and turns on appropriately linked lights. It does lack impressive features such as cameras or sensors found in some smart home devices however, instead coming across more like a fancy regular garage door opener than something especially, “Smart.”

Converted Garage Door Openers

What Garage Door Openers Work With Craftsman?

craftsman garage door opener
craftsman garage door opener

About Craftsman:

Craftsman is known as a company that makes a wide range of products and hardware. Should you need air compressors, impact wrenches, radios, saws, snowblowers, pliers, batteries, oil filter tools for cars, or–the focus of this article–garage door openers, Craftsman is a company that you can see makes a lot of stuff for Craftsmen and women (excuse the bad pun).

Garage Door Openers That Are Compatible with Craftsman:

Attaching a Craftsman Garage Door Opener Connectivity Hub to your Craftsman garage door opener can make it, “Smart,” as well as using a Craftsman AssureLink Smart Control Garage Door Opener Smartphone Control Kit to interact with your smartphone. It uses its own app and account, however, so without some creative programming workarounds, you can’t really link it with other smart devices like the above-discussed Alexa or Google Home.

Features Supported by Craftsman:

As long as you have installed the above-discussed products like the Craftsman AssureLink Smart Control Garage Door Opener Smartphone Control Kit and an account you can have your smartphone interact with your now-smart garage door opener. Without any other tweaking, however, you can’t really make it part of a big smart home network.

What Garage Door Openers Work With Smartthings?

smartthings garage door opener
smartthings garage door opener

About Smartthings:

Smartthings actually works with popular security company ADT to make and monitor everything within a smart network from smoke and carbon monoxide to water leaks or suspicious motion outside your home. It also has the GoControl Garage Door Opener which allows users to monitor as well as control their garage via the Smartthings/ADT apps.

Garage Door Openers That Work With Smartthings:

The GoControl Garage Door Opener can be connected to basically any automatic garage door opener. The, “Catch,” is that it then only works with its own apps and ADT, of course, requires a subscription. This is not a case where you just pay the initial price to install a device, you’ll need to keep paying.

Features Supported by Smartthings:

Assuming you have multiple features connected to your Smartthings and ADT apps you can be aware of everything from if your house has a water leak or someone breaking-in a window to controlling your garage. It’s just that it all HAS to be on this network and THIS network also costs a monthly fee. That fee provides the security coverage of ADT too, so if you want security monitoring that also is connected to your smart devices and smart garage this is a good option. Otherwise, you may be annoyed by the fees.

What Garage Door Openers Work With MyQ?

MyQ Garage door opener
MyQ Garage door opener

About MyQ:

MyQ is a program that can connect with almost any garage door openers that are themselves connected to WiFi, and which are not part of any of the closed-off networks which have been discussed as only working with specific programs or services. MyQ is fantastic if you have a newer garage door opener with WiFi compatibility. An older garage door opener, though? You’re out of luck.

Garage Door Openers that Work With MyQ:

MyQ proudly states that is works with almost any WiFi-enabled garage door opener, and it is officially partnered with Chamberlain and Liftmaster–all of their WiFi-ready garage door openers use MyQ. MyQ is itself not any kind of hardware, it is simply a program that works with garage door openers that are already new enough to be, “Smart.” Hence, if you don’t have a WiFi-connected garage door opener you can’t really use MyQ, you need the hardware to convert your garage door opener or (if you want to spend the money) a new WiFi-ready garage door opener.

Features Supported by MyQ:

MyQ is great in that once you have it synced with your WiFi-enabled garage door opener it is compatible with Android devices, Apple devices, Google Home Assistant, and the touched-upon IFTTT app. Therefore you can easily toggle it open or closed, use voice commands, and it can alert you to unexpected opening or closing (e.g. someone tries to manually force it open).

As long as your garage door opener is WiFi-ready and not one of those closed networks MyQ is wonderfully useful.

What Garage Door Openers Work With Chamberlain?

chamberlain garage door opener
chamberlain garage door opener

About Chamberlain:

Chamberlain makes a variety of garage door openers from belt drive and chain drive to ones that utilize smart features. Chamberlain smart garage door openers actually are programmed to easily work with MyQ…and in fact ONLY work with MyQ.

Garage Door Openers that Work With Chamberlain:

As touched upon above, Chamberlain garage door openers that have smart features are designed to work with MyQ. While MyQ DOES NOT require a Chamberlain garage door opener, Chamberlain garage door openers that are smart DO require MyQ, if that makes sense.

Features Supported by Chamberlain:

Anything that MyQ can do, a smart garage door opener from Chamberlain can do. That means once you have it synced with your WiFi-enabled garage door opener it is compatible with Android devices, Apple devices, Google Home Assistant, and the often-mentioned in this piece IFTTT app.

What Garage Door Openers Work With Liftmaster?

liftmaster garage door opener
liftmaster garage door opener

About Liftmaster:

Much of what was said about MyQ and Chamberlain apply to Liftmaster. MyQ is designed to work with any WiFi-enabled Liftmaster garage door opener and Liftmaster requires MyQ for its smart features–but this is okay as MyQ works with so many smartphones and smart devices.

Garage Door Openers that Work With Liftmaster:

As with Chamberlain, Liftmaster garage door openers that have smart features are designed to work with MyQ. While MyQ DOES NOT require a Liftmaster garage door opener, Liftmaster garage door openers that are smart DO require MyQ, if you see the overall theme with Chamberlain as well as Liftmaster.

Features Supported by Liftmaster:

Excuse the repetition, but anything that MyQ can do, a smart garage door opener from Liftmaster can do. That means once you have it synced with your WiFi-enabled garage door opener it is compatible with Android devices, Apple devices, Google Home Assistant, and–you guessed it–the IFTTT app!

What Garage Door Openers Work With with Genie?

About Genie:

Genie makes the smart garage door opener that works with a program known as Aladdin (yes, like Aladdin and the Genie, they are pretty clever). Their wifi-enabled smart garage door openers are pretty popular thanks to a wide variety of other smart devices they work with…

Garage Door Openers that Work With Genie:

As just said, Genie smart garage door openers work with a lot of smart devices. You can use its Aladdin app with your Alexa, Google Home, and even though it was not designed that way, MyQ can link-up with a Genie smart garage door opener outside of its native Aladdin app with some technical know-how and tweaking.

Features Supported by Genie:

The native Aladdin app has many useful features found with all the other apps such as MyQ or smart devices. It can be toggled within the app to open or close, linked with smart devices to respond to voice commands, and can alert you to unexpected opening or closing (e.g. someone tries to manually force it open).

What Garage Door Openers Work With Atoms

About Atoms:

Atoms is the smart garage door opener created by Skylink. It is known for being one of the more quiet garage door openers–of the older style or smart design–and utilizes its own home automation network.

Garage Door Openers that Work With Atoms:

Atoms basically only works with Atoms. MyQ has limited functionality with it, it does not connect with popular smart devices such as Alexa or Google Home, and while it works with other Skylink features, that is all it really works with.

Features Supported by Atoms:

An Atoms garage door opener can be programmed to work with other Skylink devices such as their lights or other devices that use their plugs. That is great if you are using Skylink devices, but all your other smart products are essentially locked-out. If that sounds kind of annoying, it is. Wired magazine gave the Atoms garage door opener a, “Meh,” 5 out of 10 due to all these limits.

Smart Cameras and Garage Door Openers

What Garage Door Openers Work With Wyze

About Wyze:

Wyze makes a number of smart devices from thermometers to popular and relatively inexpensive smart cameras. Through using a contact sensor in unison with your garage door opener you can have Wyze and its sensors work to open your garage, but this is honestly more of a, “Hack,” figured out by users who’ve posted their results than a purposeful function of Wyze.

Garage Door Openers That Work With Wyze:

With the right apps or technical know-how, users have been able to tweak Wyze to work with any garage and make it, “Smart.” However, there is not an official built-in ability with Wyze to work with a garage door opener.

Features Supported by Wyze:

Wyze has many great features that involve linking their smart devices together to keep your home safe and supervised by its network. As stated, however, there are not any official built-in garage door opener features with Wyze, although making tweaks so that its smart camera and contact sensors or plugs work in unison to open your garage is doable with some handiwork, and thanks to Wyze being relatively inexpensive you save a lot compared to more expensive smart garage door openers.

In Closing: You’re Now a Pro About Smart Devices For Your Garage!

There clearly was a lot of ground to cover when it comes to smart devices and picking the perfect one for your own garage. Whether in the end you prefer utilizing a device found in a smart home, converting your existing garage door, or buying a smart camera the main idea is that you’ve made things easier and more automated. At the end of the day, as long as your smart garage door opener is getting the job done to your liking, you’ve made the right choice!
